Portrait artist creating bespoke oil portraits for over 10 years

I'm Genevieve, an oil portrait artist based in Bristol, in the South West of England.

I specialise in high-quality, bespoke oil portrait commissions, as well as my own portfolio of personal work.

Portraiture involves vulnerability for both artist and subject. A successful portrait hinges on our connection, revealing not just a likeness, but a glimpse of an essence - a moment in time.

Bespoke oil portrait commissions

Oil portraits of a loved one will be treasured for years to come.

I love sharing the journey of a commission with a client; getting to know the person, setting up a photoshoot and then painting the portrait and capturing their soul and likeness. Please get in touch using the buttons below, and we can begin the work together.

You have exceeded my expectations and Elaine and I love the painting. You have captured her perfectly, her enjoyment of life and enthusiasm jumps out of the portrait every time I look at it.

Old Masters Inspired Portraits with Genevieve Murray

An interview with artist Genevieve Murray talking about her oil portraits and the inspirations behind it.

My Portraits

I have always loved to paint people, my objective is to capture the subject’s essence in every portrait. Before painting, I look to connect with my subjects, so building trust is key. My portraits reflect my curiosity and the bonds I form.

My inspirations are the old masters such as Manet, Vermeer, and Caravaggio. Their traditional way of framing and lighting a portrait are important influences in my work. I look for compositions which illustrate a moment in time, an interesting expression, or the way the light and atmosphere shapes a person. My fascination for others is revealed in the way I try to capture a brief moment of their life in paint.

I've exhibited at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London, South West Academy Open, and Victoria Art Gallery. I am now a studio holder at The Island in Bristol.

I am based primarily in Bristol and have a painting studio at The Island in the centre. I have travelled and would cover all over the south west of England to consult and deliver oil portraits to clients. This includes: Taunton, Bath, Gloustershire, Swindon, Frome, Cotswolds, Worcester, Herefordshire, Salisbury and Oxford.
